Whittingehame Estate: Self Supply of Woodfuel through Farm Woodland Management

Michael Brander, owner of Whittingehame Estate, wanted a more environmentally sustainable and lower cost source of heating fuel for newly renovated estate buildings. At the same time, the need to bring 300 acres of woodlands back into good order, after 50 years of neglect, presented a major financial burden. The possibility of extracting low cost wood fuel for heating from woodlands on the estate presented a valuable opportunity to make overall woodland management economically viable. Installing wood-fueled heating systems, therefore, seemed the clear way forward. The Renewable Heat Incentive(RHI) made wood fuel even more financially attractive.
